When one door closes, another opens….
Since 2009, the Ten Yoga Studio located at 204 Simcoe Ave, has succeeded in providing a relaxing environment in our community, while providing a home base for yoga teachers and wellness professionals. Having been the longest running Yoga Studio in Georgina, it’s with sense of pride and a heavy heart; I announce the Studio closing and my teaching sabbatical.
In 2008, I started teaching in my living room, before I joined the Georgina Healing Arts Centre and took on the role of developing the yoga programming for the centre – now known as the Ten Yoga Studio. Like the meaning of Yoga, union or to come together; I am proud to say that Ten Yoga’s principals were built on egalitarianism. Working under the “Ten Yoga” umbrella the unified brand provided clear messaging to the public, whereas co-operatively sharing the studio provided financial efficiency, while respecting the team as independent operators.
With equity leading the way the need to increase student access and to consider financial diversity became apparent. In response, the “10 Yoga Levels” were created and the mobile programs were expanded, to include: the Town of Georgina, Retirement Centers, School Boards, Charitable Organizations, an International Health Centre and South Lake Hospital. In addition, 100 TV episodes were recorded and provided to the community for free, by volunteering as the Community Producer and Host for Rogers TV’s “Ten Yoga Show”.
Ten Yoga was recognized with a “Community Spirit Award” and 4 nominations from the Georgina Chamber of Commerce in Business Excellence, Georgina Advocate Reader Choice Award for “Best Studio” both in gold and silver, nomination for East Gwillimbury’s and Georgina’s Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Award and York Region’s Community Character Award. These are incredible honours and they helped to fuel my passion as an entrepreneur over the past 11 years.
As a Teacher, I specialize in fitness diversity; taught +5000 hours, I hold +600 hours of certifications and I have been practicing for 22 years. I am very proud of the accomplishments of this little yoga business that started in my living room, with the enduring support of my husband Dave, it certainly grew more than I expected. It’s time for a rest, a sabbatical will be welcomed. I wish the team success. Special thanks to all of the students who have trusted my teachings – I’ll see you on the mat soon!
